Ayurveda has a unique approach to understanding depression with its three different causes and types:
Vata depression - A lot like anxiety, this kind of depression is vacuous and terrifying and can make us feel paralyzed to act. Western medicine recognizes that the comorbidity of anxiety and depression may be as high as 60%.
Pitta depression - A kind of self-hatred that is born from internalizing negative thoughts and feelings.
Kapha depression - What most of us think of as depression - lethargy, loss of interest in life, helplessness and hopelessness.
With this understanding Yoga Psychotherapy and Ayurveda can specify treatment options that are unique to each individual case. Modern therapies are also incorporated, such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to help clients identify thoughts that may be perpetuating unhealthy behaviors.
The greatest challenge with depression is the motivation to maintain regularity in self-care and therapeutic treatment. Yoga inherently encourages healthy discipline and routine which can be critical for successful recovery.
